While plot details of the upcoming Rick and Morty movie continue to remain under wraps, fans worldwide believe the project will resemble an iconic Steven Spielberg adventure franchise. In a recent interview, Cartoon Network president Michael Ouweleen shared minor tidbits about the much-awaited film before revealing that program co-creator Dan Harmon has based several elements of the movie around the Indiana Jones series.

While speaking with Collider‘s Steve Weintraub at the Annecy International Film Festival, Ouweleen noted that Harmon wants the Rick and Morty movie to feel like an Indiana Jones adventure.

“These guys understand story and adventure better than anybody,” he said. “What Dan would want to do with the Rick and Morty movie is that he indelibly remembers going to see the Indiana Jones movies, so he’s solving for that feeling of walking out. He’s like, ‘I want to replicate the feeling of walking out and hitting the sidewalk having just seen an Indiana Jones.’ And you know he holds himself to a high bar, so that’s the bar he’s holding himself to on that thing.”

First released in 2013, Adult Swim has since spawned nine seasons, with its latest installment only making its debut last month. Additionally, the forthcoming Rick and Morty movie will mark the first time that the franchise has forayed into the big-screen territory.

Despite its established lore, Ouweleen has insisted that newcomers will be able to enjoy the film as much as the long-term fans. He has assured that “you won’t have to have studied Rick and Morty” before watching the movie.

Nevertheless, he remained tight-lipped when asked about the potential title of the film, simply replying, “Oh, God, no,” to the question.

Notably, details regarding the Rick and Morty movie have been extremely scarce till now. It remains unclear if the feature-length outing of the fan-favorite duo will tie into the upcoming seasons of the animated series. In accordance, the project has yet to receive an official release date schedule.
