‘8-member entourage, 14 bodyguards’: Piyush Mishra slams Bollywood stars’ massive entourage; says Ranbir Kapoor is rare Bollywood star with zero tantrums
Actor and lyricist Piyush Mishra recently weighed in on the large entourages of many actorsin the film industry that is impacting the film budgets and the way industry is perceived. In an interaction, Piyush admitted that he loves working in the South film industry because their actors don’t have any hang-ups and don’t throw around their weight as stars. He spoke about actors in the Hindi film industry walking around with 8–9 people and 12 bodyguards, something he finds unnecessary. “Kaun maarne aa raha hai tumhe?” he asked while talking about the huge security team most stars walk with these days. As earlier reports reveal, nine times out of 10, the cost is footed by producers of the film the actors are working in.
Speaking to Curly Tales, Piyush said, “People live in hang-ups, they have a lot of tantrums. Their entourage is so long. Almost 8-9 people will come with them, they will walk with at least 12 bodyguards but why do you need these many bodyguards? You are a single person. Who is coming to kill you? I don’t mind this and it is not that it is not applicable to me. I have one assistant and one make-up artist and I don’t need anybody else after these two. What is the need for so many people – one person is to drink with you. One is to give you a drink, one is to comb your hair, one is to do your makeup. So I don’t understand the meaning behind this.”
Piyush Mishra, who played an important role in Imtiaz Ali’s Tamasha with Ranbir Kapoor, and shared that the actor has no hang-ups about being a star even though he is fully aware of his stardom. He said, “Ranbir ghazab hai. He doesn’t have any tantrums because he knows he’s such a big star. He has no hang-ups. He is my favourite actor.” The actor also clarified that he has never seen Ranbir throwing a tantrum or acting pricey.
Earlier, directors Sanjay Gupta and Anurag Kashyap have also spoken about the same issue. Sanjay had spoken about one particular actor, without naming him, who travels with six vanity vans. He said, “I know certain actors who have six makeup vans. It’s mandatory. The first van is his personal space. This is real; I’m very serious. Wahan saab nanga baithte hain (Sir sits naked in that van). Then, next to that is saab’s other van, wahan pe saab makeup and hair karte hain (There, sir has his makeup and hair done). Uske baaju mein is the van jahan saab meetings karte hain (In the van next to that, sir has his meetings).”
The filmmaker added, “Hear me out. There’s a fourth van, which has his gym. Wahan saab workout karte hain (Sir works out there). I said fine. You have to keep one thing in mind; workout van means he’ll bring his trainer, his assistant, the driver of the van, and the maintenance man of the van. That’s six people for one van. Then, makeup and hair and the stylists have their own assistants.”
Similarly, Anurag Kashyap had pointed out how chefs of certain stars charge Rs 2 lakh per day. He told Humans of Cinema, “Somebody has a chef who charges Rs 2 lakh per day to make this strange healthy food,” adding, “A lot of money that is spent doesn’t go into making the film. It goes into the paraphernalia, it goes into the entourage. You’re shooting in the middle of a jungle, but one car will be sent to the city three hours away specifically to get you that five-star burger you want.”
