Indonesia’s Ceramic Industry Faces 130% Import Surge from India Amid Dumping Concerns

The Indonesian ceramic industry is facing severe pressure after imports from India skyrocketed by 130% in the first five months of 2025, according to the Indonesian Ceramic Association (Asaki). The association alleges that these imports may be linked to dumping practices, which could severely disrupt the local market.

Official Data Reveals Sharp Increase

Figures from Statistics Indonesia (BPS) show that ceramic product imports under HS code 69 reached US$24.82 million between January and June 2025 — a 90% year-on-year increase compared to US$13 million in the same period of 2024. Alongside India, imports from China are also contributing to mounting market pressure. Indonesia already imposes antidumping duties on ceramic tile imports from China.

Dumping Allegations and US Tariff War Link

Edy Suyanto, Chairman of Asaki, suspects that Indonesia has become a diversion market for Indian ceramic exports originally destined for the United States. The shift comes after US tariffs on Indian goods — initiated under former President Donald Trump’s protectionist trade policies — were raised to 50% due to India’s continued purchases of Russian crude oil and weapons.

Strategic Market Shift by Indian Exporters

Facing restricted access to the US market, India has been actively seeking alternative export destinations, including Indonesia. The Indian government has encouraged its industries to diversify export markets through new trade agreements to offset the losses from US trade restrictions.

Impact on Indonesian Manufacturers

The surge in low-priced imports from India, coupled with rising energy costs and weak domestic demand, threatens the competitiveness of Indonesian ceramic producers. Asaki warns that prolonged dumping practices could lead to long-term market disruption and potential job losses in the domestic industry.
