But for Maggie Gyllenhaal, the leap from The Lost Daughter to the punk-rock, 1930s-infused world of The Bride! was less of a career move and more of a sudden, brilliant manifestation. According to star Peter Sarsgaard, Gyllenhaal didn’t just step onto a set on March 6; she orchestrated ‘the biggest party you could possibly arrange,’ balancing a massive logistical machine with the raw, complicated themes usually reserved for arthouse cinema.”

Sarsgaard, who plays Detective Jake Wiles in the film, recently reflected on Gyllenhaal’s evolution as a filmmaker, noting that her process remains as instinctive as ever, even as the scale of her projects has exploded. “I remember when she started writing it, it came out in a very similar way to The Lost Daughter, where she just had an idea, told me about it, and then she went up to the top of the hill and started writing it,” Sarsgaard recalls. “Then, a couple of months later, she had it done, and it was on to the next thing. I don’t think she knew that this movie was going to be this big until she started putting it together. She didn’t say, ‘I’m going to make a big movie.’”
Despite its “big movie” feel, Sarsgaard notes that The Bride! maintains a complex emotional depth often missing from modern blockbusters. Managing that balance while leading a massive production required a level of technical mastery that Sarsgaard found extraordinary. “What stands out most about the way she directs? She has such unlimited energy,” Sarsgaard explains. “And the fact that she has all these cameras going, all these monitors, and she’s able to give notes. She’s doing cross-coverage. You have to look at two monitors at the same time and note two actors at the same time. And it’s so fluid and easy for Maggie, working with actors. I mean, this is a huge logistical thing. This is like putting on a party that is the biggest party you could possibly arrange.”
For Sarsgaard, Gyllenhaal’s success on such a large canvas, working with an elite ensemble including Jessie Buckley, Christian Bale, Annette Bening, and Penélope Cruz, stems from her ability to trust her team. In an industry that can often feel formulaic, he finds her specific artistic “taste” to be the film’s secret weapon.
“I’m so jaded about what can actually be done in our business,” Sarsgaard admits. “It seems like a big movie, but it’s got themes that big movies don’t always have. It’s complicated in the ways that a lot of big movies aren’t. She also has such good taste in terms of hiring people. She’s very good at delegating and trusting the people around her, which you have to be on a movie this size.”
Ultimately, the actor views the finished film as a triumph of manifestation. “I just can’t really believe that we’re now on the other side of this fever dream that she had manifested in all kinds of ways that I couldn’t ever really imagine.”
