Filmmaker Farah Khan recently shared an interesting behind-the-scenes story about her directorial debut, Main Hoon Na. During a visit to actress Amrita Rao’s home for her vlog, Farah revealed that Ayesha Takia was originally finalised for the role of Sanjana Bakshi in the 2004 blockbuster but dropped out just before filming began.

Farah recalled that the team was ready to begin shooting at St. Paul’s School in Darjeeling when Ayesha informed her that she couldn’t join the schedule. “Two weeks before the shoot, we didn’t have a heroine. We had finalised Ayesha Takia, but she chose to do another film with Imtiaz Ali. She said her schedule was for 60 days but ended up shooting for two months,” Farah explained.
With time running out, producer Gauri Khan stepped in with a suggestion. “Gauri told me to check this girl out — Amrita Rao. When I first met her, she didn’t look like my character at all. But I gave her the emotional scene to test, and when she faced the camera, she was fire. She had that rare quality — on camera she looked magical,” Farah said, comparing Amrita’s screen presence to that of Sridevi.
Amrita went on to play Sanjana opposite Zayed Khan, while Shah Rukh Khan and Sushmita Sen led the cast. Main Hoon Na became one of the biggest hits of 2004.
Meanwhile, Ayesha Takia, who exited the project for Imtiaz Ali’s Socha Na Tha alongside Abhay Deol, saw the film underperform at the box office.
Amrita Rao was last seen in Jolly LLB 3, directed by Subhash Kapoor. The film, featuring Akshay Kumar, Arshad Warsi, Huma Qureshi, and Saurabh Shukla, did well at the box office.
