Goodbye 63-Year-Old Tax Law! Lok Sabha Clears New Income-Tax Bill — Big Changes from 2026
The Indian tax system is getting a historic makeover! On August 11, 2025, the Lok Sabha passed the Taxation Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2025, set to replace the Income Tax Act, 1961 — a law that’s been amended over 4,000 times in its 63-year life.
Introduced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, the new bill promises simpler rules, fewer disputes, and stronger taxpayer rights. It’s the updated version of the draft presented in February, now refined with 285 suggestions from a Parliamentary Select Committee led by Baijayant Panda.

What’s Changing?
-
Clearer language – Say goodbye to confusing tax jargon.
-
Fewer loopholes – Aligning definitions and fixing inconsistencies.
-
New rules for donations – Religious-cum-charitable trusts stay exempt, but others like schools or hospitals will pay tax on anonymous donations.
-
Faster compliance – Less paperwork, fewer headaches.
When Will It Start?
From April 1, 2026, this new law will officially replace the old Income Tax Act. Until then, the current rules stay in play.
With promises of transparency, simplicity, and reduced red tape, this bill could be the biggest shake-up to India’s tax regime in decades. Now, all eyes are on the Rajya Sabha and President Droupadi Murmu for the final nod.
