Malayalam actress Kalyani Priyadarshan has been cast as the female lead opposite Ranveer Singh in the zombie thriller Pralay, marking her Bollywood debut. The news was first announced by entertainment journalist Rahul Raut on social media on January 4, 2026, confirming the actress will star in the Jai Mehta directorial, set to begin shooting in April 2026.
The film will be a major venture into uncharted territory for mainstream Hindi cinema. Directed by Jai Mehta, son of acclaimed filmmaker Hansal Mehta, Pralay marks both Kalyani’s entry into Bollywood and Ranveer Singh’s debut as a producer under his banner Maa Kasam Films. The project is being co-produced by Hansal Mehta’s True Story Films in association with Applause Entertainment, led by Sameer Nair.
Zombie Genre Returns to Hindi Cinema
Pralay arrives at a moment when the zombie genre remains largely unexplored in mainstream Hindi cinema. The 2013 film Go Goa Gone, starring Saif Ali Khan, Kunal Khemu, and Vir Das, stands as India’s first zombie film. Directed by Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK, the comedy-thriller has maintained cult status, with audiences continuing to request a sequel.
Industry insiders suggest Pralay is being mounted on a considerable budget, with extensive VFX and world-building at its core. According to Mid-Day, the film will reportedly explore the protagonist’s struggle for survival in a dystopian world, using the zombie framework as a metaphor for societal and moral decay. The production plans include recreating a devastated Mumbai, blending physical sets with artificial intelligence extensions.
Riding Success
Kalyani Priyadarshan comes to the project following her success in Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra, which became the highest-grossing Malayalam film of all time. The 2025 supernatural thriller, directed by Dominic Arun and produced by Dulquer Salmaan, features Kalyani as Chandra, a vampire with supernatural abilities. Sources confirm the actress has already begun preparatory work for her role in Pralay, which reportedly demands both emotional depth and intense action.
For Ranveer Singh, Pralay will be a sharp pivot from his recent spy thriller Dhurandhar, which has emerged as one of 2025’s biggest box office triumphs. The film crossed the Rs 700 crore net mark domestically after 25 days in theatres, becoming the first Bollywood film to achieve this milestone. Dhurandhar reached the Rs 300 crore club in just nine days, making it the fastest film of 2025 to hit that mark.
