Malaysia Airlines Eyes India as Key Market, Rejects JV Plans, Focuses on Growth
Malaysia Airlines Berhad considers India a top-priority market and aims to be recognized as a core service provider connecting the country to the world. Group Managing Director of Malaysia Aviation Group, Izham bin Ismail, highlighted India’s rapid urbanization, rising middle-class income, and growing disposable income as key growth drivers.
Top Revenue Market for the Airline
India stands as Malaysia Airlines’ highest revenue-generating market, followed by Australia and the UK. The airline currently operates 77 weekly flights across 10 Indian destinations and plans to increase this to 80 flights per day by December 1, 2025. In the first half of 2025 alone, it transported 1.3 million passengers to and from India, contributing 11% of total revenue and 20% of passenger volume.

Partnership Over Ownership – No JV Plans
While some Southeast Asian airlines have formed joint ventures in India, Malaysia Airlines prefers to remain a foreign operator. Ismail said the airline believes in deep partnerships rather than entering the domestic market, citing its successful collaboration with IndiGo and partnerships with Air India.
Global Connectivity Through Kuala Lumpur Hub
Malaysia Airlines connects India with destinations in Australia, New Zealand, and China through its Kuala Lumpur hub. The airline has a surplus network flow to China, which currently lacks direct air connectivity with India.
Customer Experience Over Fleet Expansion
Ismail stressed that the airline invests strategically, balancing aircraft purchases with premium customer experience in areas such as food, cabin comfort, and in-flight entertainment. “We don’t just splash money on planes; we invest where it matters most – our customers,” he said.
Future Plans – More Seats, More Frequency
The airline is not introducing new Indian destinations in 2025 but may explore expansion in 2026-2027, with cities like Jaipur under consideration. For now, the focus is on increasing seat capacity and flight frequency to strengthen connectivity.
