CXMT, China’s largest DRAM chip maker and by some estimates the world’s fourth largest maker, has raised about 57.92 billion yuan (about $8.6 billion) in a July 2026 IPO on Shanghai’s STAR market. Shares fell to 8.66 yuan each before the first day of trading, up 466%, giving the company a market value of more than $487 billion. A senior federal official told the New York Post that “there is absolutely no doubt that Chinese Communist Party interference played a role in this so-called IPO.”

National security angle

CXMT isn’t just another chip maker going public. It sits at the center of China’s aggressive push for semiconductor self-sufficiency, a strategic priority that has only intensified while Washington tightens export controls on advanced chip technology. The company manufactures DRAM, a type of memory found in everything from smartphones to data centers to military systems.

US officials are reportedly considering adding CXMT to the Commerce Department’s list, which would severely restrict American companies from doing business with the company. That recommendation is reportedly on hold in June 2026, although CXMT already appears on the US defense list.

First day popup 466%. Average first-day returns for IPOs on the STAR market have historically been elevated compared to Western exchanges, but a nearly six-fold increase in one day for a company that raised nearly $9 billion is extraordinary by any standard. If the Greenshoe option is implemented, total revenue could reach $9.8 billion.

Where crypto enters the picture

In a development that would have been unthinkable a few years ago, CXMT’s IPO isn’t just playing on traditional exchanges. Trade.xyz launched a perpetual futures contract for CXMT on the Hyperliquid blockchain, allowing traders to predict the stock’s price before it officially begins trading in Shanghai.

Geopolitics, chips, and market impact

A market capitalization of $487 billion makes CXMT larger than most Western semiconductor companies by valuation, although comparisons of revenue and technological capabilities tell a more dramatic story. DRAM production is still dominated by Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron, and CXMT’s current technology is reportedly lagging behind. The valuation reflects the strategic importance and support of the government as much as it does the commercial basis.

The Trade.xyz perpetual contract on Hyperliquid demonstrates that the DeFi platform has the increased ability to serve as a real-time sentiment gauge for traditional market events. Hyperliquid traders are pricing in CXMT’s launch before a single share changes hands in Shanghai.
